KRTS Youth Media Project gives student producers the tools to tell the stories that matter to them.

What IS the KRTS Youth Media Project?

Last year, KRTS Youth Media student producers pitched, wrote and produced their own radio stories. Students acted as editors on each others pieces and participated in a seminar-style class. We read about radio. We listened to radio. We breathed, ate and dreamt radio.

Students pursued their own story ideas – everything from pop culture commentary to testimonials of stereotypes and racism. We learned how to do thoughtful, in-depth interviews, tackle the hard issues and turn it all into sound-rich, compelling radio stories.

At the end of eight weeks, the students presented their work to the community at a Listening Party at the Marfa Book Company. They hosted the event and a post-show Q & A session.

What about this year?

We need your help to make the second year of the KRTS Youth Media Project a reality. The seed funds we received from the American Graduate Initative were put to good use – we have a curriculum, partnerships with local organizations, the facilities and interested students and mentors.

This year, we want to do something different. We want to pay our student producers for their efforts. Last year, we aired the final features on Marfa Public Radio – and we were proud to do so. Now, we want to put our money where our ears are.

Why should I support Youth Media?

Youth Media is important because it gives teenagers a voice and a platform for the stories only they can tell – a critical perspective on our community that we otherwise miss out on. When you give teenagers the tools and space to explore the issues that affect their lives, you end up with honest, insightful work.

That's what we gain. They gain multimedia, writing, editing and collaboration skills – and the confidence that comes with producing something original.

Risks and Challenges

We learned a lot from the project last year. A couple of our takeaways were:

Keep class sizes small! Not only does this not overburden our resources and facilities at Marfa Public Radio, we also believe it is the optimal student experience.

Start working on audio editing skills earlier in the curriculum. This year, we're going to start editing audio first thing, so students feel comfortable with the program we use when it comes time to edit their features.

Incorporate more community members. Last year, we had a couple of industry professionals come and host conversations with our student producers. We want to incorporate more of these chats into this year's curriculum.

Having done this once before, we have a better idea of our own capacity, the capacity of our students and the potential for this program. We're ready to do it better this spring.
